Welcome to Tokach Angus Ranch, a three-generation family-owned Angus operation located southwest of Bismarck, North Dakota. Our program is built on tradition, land stewardship, and the production of functional, low-input Angus cattle designed to work in real-world environments.
We invite you to explore our cattle program, learn more about our history, and visit with us about how Tokach Angus genetics can add value to your operation.
The Tokach family legacy began in 1898 when Great-Grandpa Stephan Tokach homesteaded the land that remains the heart of our operation today. In 1939, the homestead was purchased by Grandpa Matt Tokach, whose vision helped shape the ranch’s future. Matt began planting the shelter belts that still surround the ranch, adding both beauty and protection to the land. Richard’s father, Dick, and his sister Ruth Ann helped tend those early trees—earning one cent per tree for hoeing them.
The Angus program at Tokach Angus Ranch began in 1955, when Dick Tokach purchased his first registered Angus heifer from Lyle Dawson of Oak Coulee Ranch. Much of today’s cow herd can be traced back to that original investment. Dick continued to develop the herd, and in 1975 Tokach Angus Ranch hosted its first production sale at Kist’s Livestock Auction in Mandan, North Dakota.
Today, Tokach Angus Ranch is operated by Richard and Kathy Tokach alongside their son Ben, his wife Natalie, and their sons Bentley, Briar, and Gentry. Together, three generations remain actively involved in the daily management of the ranch and the continued improvement of the Angus herd.
Our focus remains on producing functional, low-input Angus seedstock backed by disciplined record keeping, strict culling standards, and hands-on management. We enjoy visiting with customers and fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen and welcome the opportunity to show our cattle and our ranch firsthand.
You are invited to follow Tokach Angus Ranch on Facebook and to sign up for our email list to receive sale information, herd updates, and important announcements throughout the year.
At Tokach Angus Ranch, our breeding program is centered on producing functional, low-input Angus cattle that perform without shortcuts. Our cattle are developed without creep feeding or supplemental pasture feeding and are expected to work for a living—grazing native pastures and crop residue under real-world conditions.
Individual performance evaluation has been a cornerstone of our program from the beginning. Our cow herd has been enrolled in Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) since 1963, and we were among the original participants in the MaternalPlus program, which tracks reproductive performance on every cow, every year. All sale bulls and heifers are DNA tested and genetically profiled to support informed, data-driven selection decisions.
Tokach bulls are structurally sound, athletic, and not over-conditioned. They are selected to sire low to moderate birth weights, strong weaning performance without the benefit of creep feed, rapid feedlot gain, and carcass merit for producers who market cattle on a grid and value Certified Angus Beef® premiums.
The foundation of our program is the Tokach female. Our cow herd consists of hardworking, easy-fleshing, maternal cows bred to thrive in big country with minimal intervention. Females that fail to meet strict standards for disposition, feet, udders, or fertility are culled without exception. Our bred heifer offering represents a true cross section of the program and carries the consistent, recognizable “Tokach female” look.
Each year, Tokach Angus Ranch hosts an annual production sale on Presidents’ Day Monday in February at Kist’s Livestock Auction in Mandan, North Dakota. We offer approximately 120 yearling bulls and 60 bred purebred and commercial heifers, with the sale broadcast live through DV Auctions.
We take great pride in our breeding program, our cattle, and our operation. We enjoy visiting with customers, cattlemen, and cattlewomen who value practical, genetically sound seedstock and welcome the opportunity to show our cattle and our ranch firsthand.
You are invited to follow Tokach Angus Ranch on Facebook to stay connected and see what is happening throughout the year. You may also sign up for our Tokach Angus Ranch email list to receive sale information, herd updates, and important announcements.
Whether you are stopping by the ranch, attending the sale, or visiting with us at a show, we appreciate the relationships built through a shared commitment to quality cattle and sound management.
